What is SEM (Search Engine Marketing)?
SEM, in simplest terms, is marketing on search engines. It includes various activities aimed at promoting a company or brand and its products/services, among search engine users. Search Engine Marketing consists of two main areas:
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – optimization of a website in terms of search engine guidelines, so that it best meets the intentions of users and ranks high in organic search results.
- PPC (Pay-Per-Click) – paid search ads. Through PPC campaign, after entering a specific keyword, the website is displayed at the top of the results, and the advertiser only pays for the click that leads the user to his website.
SEO gives long-term results, but requires patience and regularity. PPC delivers instant resultst that last only as long as the paid advertising campaign is active. At SEM House, we believe that the greatest results can be achieved through combining both of these actions – optimizing the website for SEO translates into greater profitability of Google Ads campaigns. Which SEM strategy will be best for your business depends, of course, on the industry conditions as well as your specific needs and goals.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of search engine marketing?
One of the greatest advantages of SEM is definitely its cost-effectiveness. Search engine marketing typically brings tangible benefits (increased website traffic, acquiring new leads, higher conversion rates) with lower costs compared to television advertising, billboard campaigns, or influencer marketing. You also have full control over costs of your campaigns. If the SEM campaign is well planned and executed its effects will be rapid (thanks to Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, etc.), and at the same time sustainable (due to SEO optimization). It is also believed that SEM as a form of advertising is better received by potential customers, because it reaches a precisely defined group of people who are actively looking for a service or product like yours.
However, it is worth remembering that Search Engine Marketing has some limitations. The potential drawbacks of SEM typically emerge in highly competitive industries – achieving high positions for popular keywords can be very difficult or simply expensive in such cases. SEM activities also require careful planning and specialized knowledge. A poorly targeted campaign or an ill-conceived link-building strategy carries the risk of burning through the budget.
SEO and SEM - what are the differences?
SEO (search engine optimization) is an integral part of SEM – the entirety of marketing activities conducted in search engines. Therefore SEM is a broader concept than SEO and concerns both improving the website’s ranking in organic search results and conducting paid advertising campaigns.
Sometimes SEM is referred to exclusively in relation to PPC campaigns, and is then put in opposition to SEO. However, such understanding of this concept should be considered too narrow. Most specialists would agree that SEM = SEO + PPC.
What does a SEM campaign look like?
Depending on your business goals for your SEM efforts, you can focus more on the long-term benefits of SEO, rapid growth through Google Ads and other PPC campaigns, or a synergy of both strategies. Whatever direction you choose, a SEM campaign will require taking some specific steps:
- Defining the initial state and the competition analysis – the first step in any business effort is to determine where you are and where you want to go. Conducting an SEO audit of the website, assessing competitor activity, defining goals, and identifying potential challenges – all these actions will provide a solid foundation for an effective SEM strategy.
- Keyword selection – if conditions change or some actions do not yield the expected results, it’s worthwhile to introduce modifications and test new solutions. They must align with the intentions of your potential customers and thus deliver good conversion rates.
- Developing a strategy – this stage will vary for SEO and PPC campaigns. In SEO, it’s important to plan website optimization efforts and link-building activities, while for Google Ads, it’s crucial to consider campaign structure in terms of target groups, ad content, and budget.
- Campaign monitoring and optimization – SEM activities must be monitored continuously. If conditions change or some of the actions do not bring the expected results, it is worth making modifications and testing new solutions.
Why is it worth investing in SEM?
SEM is currently an essential element of the marketing strategy for any company that wants to establish an online presence and attract customers in this way. The competition is so strong that unfortunately, you can’t rely only on your great product, quality services, or informative content. Potential customers still need to find them. Well-planned and consistently executed SEM actions will bring valuable traffic to your website, increase conversion rates, and permanently enhance the recognition of your brand. Therefore, it is worth taking care of your online visibility.
